It’s essential that you have your health care lawyer review the terms of your software leasing agreement prior to your signing it. Because often, all your files are stored in proprietary form. If you decide to change your EMR company, or they go out of business, a conversion of your patient charts into a new format can be a prohibitive cost to you. And in effect, you are being held hostage. The easiest way to stop this practice, is to use software that only stores its files in generally used formats. Prevention is the best cure!
