Two investigators flashing badges come unannounced and unscheduled to visit your office. What should you do? If they do not have a warrant to search, be polite, but ask them to leave the premises. Inform them that you have an attorney and your attorney will be happy to contact them. Ask for their business cards. This will reveal if they are from the Department of Health, the Justice Department, the FBI, or some other agency. Do NOT try to explain anything to them. Do not try to fix it yourself. You will not even know why they are there in the first place. Immediately call your health law attorney before you dig a deep hole for yourself. I wish I had a nickel for every time a physician “tried to explain” only to find that they opened up a can of worms that was not relevant to the reason the investigators originally visited the office. In short, my advice is be polite, but be firm; ask them to leave, get their business cards and immediately call your health law attorney!
Yours,
Larry
